I have been working with NHS medical imaging staff.
“Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) are a common cause of pain among sonographers, with research suggesting that between 80–90.5% of sonographers are scanning in pain.”.Ref:National Library of Medicine
I have just completed a 12 week course, devised by me for Sonographers (ultrasound imaging) with Work Related Muscular Skeletal Disorders. I worked one2one with members of the team, to gain a really good understanding of the way they work during varying different scanning procedures.
Using the Alexander Technique we were able to identify where each sonographer was holding tension or sitting/standing in an awkward unbalanced position. We were able to replace their bad postural habits, with good postural habits, alleviating pain and discomfort whilst working. I also encouraged using the technique at home, travelling and during any exercise, in order that the technique became part of their daily thought patterns.
Comments from Sonographers following the course:
“I thoroughly enjoyed all sessions and it would be great if Alexander Technique sessions with Caroline were available on a regular basis for Sonographers for long term benefits.”
“It has been lovely to work with Caroline the last few weeks. Caroline has fantastic skills with teaching the Alexander technique and I am hoping to use these skills to manage my RSI pain better.“
“I now set up the room before beginning the scan. Also practicing semi-supine during my lunch breaks where I get a chance, as it helps me feel calm and ready to go for the afternoon. I am taking breaks to rest my arm during scans and also standing to scan where I can for gynae scans in particular as I feel that has helped significantly.“
“I learnt some invaluable techniques and really appreciate the 1-1 sessions with Caroline which were tailored to our individual needs/areas of pain.”
I am also in the process of running monthly workshops with all other Sonographers in the department, as a preventative measure.
“WRMSD can lead to pain, sickness absence, surgical procedures and in some cases long-term disability or career ending injury.”
